The Dutch government expects the US administration to announce large-scale sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday, October 9, and is preparing a response.
elchi reports that the newspaper “NRC” reported this, citing sources.
According to the information, the restrictions are to take effect in a few months and “could significantly paralyze the court’s activities.” As noted by the publication’s interlocutors, several European countries have already received notifications from the US about the expected announcement of sanctions that could affect the court as a whole, unlike the previously imposed restrictions against individual employees of the ICC. In this case, American companies and citizens will be prohibited from providing funds, goods, and services to the court without special permission.
However, there are still serious disagreements within the Dutch ruling coalition and among ministries regarding a possible response to Washington, the newspaper’s sources claim. Some of the discussion participants are in favor of a tough principled reaction, while others are concerned about the economic consequences of the US’s potential countermeasures.
