One of the most serious problems of the Caspian Sea is its shallowness. The decline in the water level of the Caspian Sea has been ongoing for many years. Unfortunately, this process has accelerated significantly recently, and the situation continues to worsen. A significant reduction in the size of the water area is observed. The total surface area of the sea has already decreased by more than 20 thousand square kilometers.
elchi reports, citing the Report, that President Ilham Aliyev stated this during his speech at the Caspian Ecological Summit in Turkmenbashi.
The head of state emphasized that if the current trend continues, the consequences could be catastrophic.
He noted that the shallowness problem is not just ecological: “The decline in sea level directly affects the interests of our states, impacts the lives of people in coastal areas, the economy, and transportation. We see how the coastline is receding, how the ecosystem is changing, and how problems are arising in the operation of ports and other coastal infrastructure facilities. As a result of the decline in the Caspian Sea’s water level, nearly 30 thousand hectares of land have emerged in the Azerbaijani part of the Caspian alone.
