Germany’s Revolutionary Decision: Electric Cars to Power Homes

Germany’s Federal Network Agency has allowed electric car owners to use their car batteries to power their homes and feed electricity back into the grid.

elchi reports that Reuters announced this on October 1st.

The new regulations will allow electric car owners to store electricity generated by solar panels or purchased from the grid in their car batteries, and then use it for household needs or sell it back to the grid.

Previously, owners of subsidized solar power plants could be deprived of payments under Germany’s Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG — Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz) program for mixing solar and grid energy in their batteries. The regulator’s decision removes this restriction. Meters operating at 15-minute intervals will be used to account for different energy sources. This will allow for separate recording of solar, grid, and stored electricity.

The transition period will last until September 30, 2027. During this period, users will need to coordinate with electricity grid and meter operators to adapt accounting, data processing, and billing systems.
