French President Emmanuel Macron said: “We are facing an unprecedented fire. The worst situation since the Second World War.”
“Elchi” reports that French President Emmanuel Macron, together with Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, visited the Gironde Fire and Rescue Operations Center (CODIS) in the city of Bordeaux. Receiving information about the fire covering 42,000 hectares in the Gironde region in the southwest of the country, Macron said: “I have come here to express the support of the whole country and to thank you. You joined the fight immediately after what happened. We owe you a lot. We are facing an unprecedented fire. We are experiencing the most serious situation recorded so far. We are facing the worst situation since the Second World War.”
Macron stated that since the beginning of the year, approximately 116,000 hectares of land across the country have been affected by fires, and long-lasting drought, extreme temperatures, and wind have made forest areas more susceptible to fire. Macron said, “The fire in Gironde has stabilized over the last 24 hours, but it has not yet been fully brought under control. The last 24 hours have been positive, but we must be cautious. Temperatures will rise again and the wind will continue. We will win this fight together.”
He added that those evacuated will not be allowed to return to their homes until safe conditions are created, and those who have lost their homes or businesses will be provided with shelter, economic support, insurance, and psychological assistance.
