Today, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis, Sahiba Gafarova, met with Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), who is on a visit to our country.

Sahiba Gafarova noted that the IPU has been cooperating successfully with the Milli Majlis, and specifically highlighted that since 2021, members of the Azerbaijani parliament have become more active in the IPU and are represented in leadership positions within the organization. The Speaker spoke with satisfaction about the cooperation between the Milli Majlis and the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network, as well as the support provided by Secretary General Martin Chungong to this cooperation.
The Speaker expressed her gratitude to the IPU Secretary General both for the development of mutual cooperation and for his efforts in organizing meetings between the speakers of the parliaments of Azerbaijan and Armenia. Noting that these meetings are a contribution of parliaments to the process of building trust between peoples, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova expressed her belief that after the relevant amendments are made to the Armenian Constitution, a peace treaty will soon be signed between the two countries, which will create broader opportunities for cooperation between the parliaments.
Martin Chungong pointed out that IPU-Azerbaijan relations have been transformed during his tenure as head of the organization. He stated that under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan has always been committed to developing relations with the IPU.
The Secretary General noted that Azerbaijan actively participates in IPU events, representatives of the Milli Majlis are represented in leadership positions, and there is successful cooperation between the parties.
He noted that the leadership of the Speaker of the Azerbaijani Milli Majlis in the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network has played a major role in both the development of the Network and the development of its relations with the IPU.
It was noted that achieving the establishment of a dialogue between the parliaments of Azerbaijan and Armenia within the framework of the peace process between the two countries serves peace, which is the main goal of the IPU.
At the end of the meeting, IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong was awarded the Honorary Medal of the Milli Majlis for his services in developing constructive dialogue and effective cooperation between parliaments, and for his contributions to the strengthening and expansion of bilateral and multilateral relations between the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
