At least 13 people have died in a powerful earthquake that struck the island of Kyushu in southern Japan. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced that search and rescue teams are racing against time to reach those trapped under the rubble.

9,872 people have been evacuated in the region. The earthquake caused power outages, damage to roads and a pedestrian bridge, and the walls of a historic castle collapsed.

The earthquake occurred in Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday at 16:27 local time. After the earthquake, hundreds of thousands of people were advised to move to shelters.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported the magnitude of the earthquake as 7.1, while the US Geological Survey reported it as 6.8.
Kyushu, the country’s third-largest island, was also shaken in 2016 by earthquakes in Kumamoto and neighboring Oita prefectures that caused the deaths of 278 people.
