Within the framework of the “State Program for the Improvement of Water Supply, Rainwater and Wastewater Systems in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula for 2026-2035”, approved by the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Directorate of Facilities Under Construction of the State Water Resources Agency of Azerbaijan has launched projects for the construction of new sewage collectors and wastewater treatment plants in Baku and the Absheron district.
Information about this was provided to “Elchi” by the State Water Resources Agency of Azerbaijan (ADSEA).
It was stated that one of the projects is the construction of an inlet sewage collector and a wastewater treatment plant for the Lokbatan basin.
Jeyhun Musaoğlu, press secretary of the Large Cities Water Supply, provided information about the project and noted that the construction of the inlet sewage collector for the Lokbatan basin, with a total length of 23 kilometers, and the installation of a wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 100,000 cubic meters per day will ensure sewage supply for a number of settlements: “Also, within the framework of these works, the ecological condition of the Baku Bay, as well as the Khojasan, Girmizi, Gu, and Lokbatan lakes will be improved. In the first phase, the Lokbatan wastewater treatment plant project will cover the Khojasan, Sulutepe, Shongar, Lokbatan, Yasamal, Badamdar, Bayil, and Bibiheybet massifs.”
The construction project of the inlet sewage collector and wastewater treatment plant for the Lokbatan basin began in 2025 and is scheduled to be completed in 2028.
Mursal Alashrafov, senior consultant and engineer at the Directorate of Facilities Under Construction, noted that within the framework of this project, a pumping station, fine screens, coarse screens, sand traps, oil traps, bio-phosphorus, aeration, final settling tanks, disc filters, and a UV unit will be built: “Finally, the wastewater will pass through the UV unit, and after all harmful bacteria are neutralized, it will be discharged into the sea. As a continuation of these works, metal pipes with a diameter of 1600 mm and a length of 2.7 km will be installed in the sea. An energy center will be built on the territory of the facility, and a 6-kilovolt network will be created. In short, the treatment plant will meet the most modern standards.”
Currently, reinforcement and formwork works for the curtain walls of the sand and oil trap facility are underway. Reinforcement of the bio-phosphorus tank facility, pile foundation for the aeration tank facility, and insulation works for expansion joints are being carried out. Masonry works for the administrative building are also continuing.
50 percent of the work on the construction of the inlet sewage collector for the Lokbatan basin has been completed.
This project is one of the most important projects being implemented in the direction of modernizing the sewage infrastructure of Baku. The completion of the project will make a significant contribution to minimizing the negative impact of wastewater on the environment, strengthening ecological safety, and improving the sanitary conditions of the population. At the same time, the wastewater treatment plant, which will operate based on modern technologies, will ensure that wastewater is treated in accordance with environmental standards.
