The Danube River, Europe’s main transport artery, is experiencing the severe consequences of summer drought and lack of rain.
elchi reports that, according to Serbia’s RTS television channel, a new historical minimum for water levels has been recorded at the “Bezdan” hydrological station in Vojvodina (on the border of Serbia and Hungary) — 173 centimeters below normal.
“This is a new historical minimum – it is the lowest water level ever recorded for the Danube at this station,” said Igor Kolakovic, acting director of the state enterprise “Vode Vojvodina,” commenting on the situation.
Kolakovic noted that the situation has worsened compared to a month ago: while the level dropped to 169 centimeters twice in August, current figures are even lower.
According to him, similar problems are being observed in the Tisa River, where the water flow is close to the biological minimum. In a number of Serbian regions, dredgers have been deployed to resolve the crisis, and additional pumps have been engaged to ensure water supply.
