25 cases of West Nile virus infection, including one death this year, have been confirmed in Croatia.
elchi reports that the Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ) announced this on Thursday.
Symptoms appeared in 19 patients; two had West Nile fever, and 17 had a more severe neuroinvasive form of the disease.
15 infections were recorded in Zagreb and its surroundings, making it the most affected region. Most cases of West Nile virus infection in Croatia occur between mid-July and the end of October. According to HZJZ, the virus transmission season is expected to end with the cooling of the weather.
Compared to last year, when six infections were recorded since the beginning of the year, more cases of West Nile virus have been recorded this year, but this figure is lower than in 2018, when there were 63 confirmed cases.
In an interview with local media, HZJZ stated that the European Union has experienced the most intensive season of West Nile virus spread in its entire history of observation: the virus has reached more northern regions.
