Norwegian Princess Astrid Maud Ingeborg has passed away at the age of 94, exactly two weeks after the death of her brother, King Harald V.
elchi reports that the royal house’s press service has released information regarding this.
“Princess Astrid passed away today at the age of 94. From 1954 to 1968 — for 14 years — she served as the first lady and participated in official events until the final days of her life,” the statement says.
Unlike most countries, in Norway, the term “first lady” does not apply to the prime minister’s spouse, but to the senior female representative of the royal family. Astrid received the status of first lady in 1954 after the death of her mother, Princess Märtha. In 1968, after her brother Harald married Sonja, this role passed to SONYA.
The cause of death is not disclosed. King Haakon VIII has expressed his condolences. “Aunt Astrid always supported King Harald and other members of the royal family. We learned a lot from her; she was not afraid to express her opinion. Her death is a great loss for us. We will be deeply hurt by her absence,” the royal house quotes Haakon VIII as saying.
Astrid was the second daughter of Olav V and was born in Oslo in 1932. Astrid passed away exactly two weeks after the death of Harald V, two days after his funeral.
