For the transformation of informal settlements, it is essential to officially recognize these areas and implement integrated solutions that encompass all sectors.
elchi reports that this was stated by Anaclaudia Rossbach, Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), during her speech at the dialogue session titled “Transforming Informal Settlements and Slums: Housing for All” held within the framework of WUF13.
According to her, Azerbaijan is currently co-chairing discussions on the transformation of informal settlements within the framework of the UN-Habitat open-ended working group on housing issues, together with Somalia.
Anaclaudia Rossbach noted that the recognition of informal settlements and the inclusion of data regarding these areas into statistics and census systems are among the key priorities.
The UN-Habitat head emphasized that these areas are not just problem zones, but also gateways to education, healthcare, employment, and other opportunities for people arriving in cities.
She added that the transformation of informal settlements requires integrated solutions covering housing, infrastructure, social services, and finance.
