The water temperature in the Pacific Ocean, where the El Niño climate event is developing, has exceeded 30 degrees Celsius for the first time this week.
“Elchi” reports that this information was released by the “Climate Reanalyzer” portal.
The interactive online platform was developed by the Institute for Climate Change at the University of Maine (USA) for the visualization of global climate and weather data.
According to the data, the average water temperature on the surface of all oceans recently reached 21.08 degrees Celsius.
Researchers note that such a temperature has never been recorded since measurements began. Previously, under the influence of “super events” recorded in 1997 and 2015, the ocean temperature did not exceed 29 degrees.
The World Meteorological Organization predicts that surface temperatures in the central and eastern parts of the Pacific Ocean will rise to new record highs from October to December, with the El Niño event reaching its peak in December and continuing until February 2027.
Earlier, meteorologists warned that this year’s weather event could be the strongest in the history of observations. According to researchers’ estimates, the number of days with extremely high temperatures will increase by 44% compared to normal years. Scientists believe that the heat associated with El Niño could have a harmful effect on elderly and frail individuals worldwide.
