Monkeypox Cases Surge in Hong Kong

Since August, Hong Kong has recorded 21 monkeypox infections, accounting for 70% of all cases detected in the city since the beginning of 2026.

According to “Elchi” news, this was reported by the Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection.

According to the organization, 30 infections have been detected in the city since the beginning of the year, of which 23 were local and 7 were transmitted by individuals arriving from abroad. A total of 114 monkeypox infections have been recorded in Hong Kong since 2022. All patients are men, and the majority are unvaccinated.

The center attributes the increase in infections in recent months to high-risk sexual contact. In response, authorities have strengthened epidemiological surveillance and expanded the vaccination program.

It is noted that approximately 360 people from high-risk groups have received the monkeypox vaccine in the last two weeks.

The most recent infection was detected in a 29-year-old man who sought medical attention for a rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. Laboratory tests confirmed the infection. The patient’s condition is stable.

Hong Kong authorities are continuing their epidemiological investigation and intend to inform the World Health Organization about the detected infections.
