The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Azerbaijan has issued a statement regarding State Sovereignty Day.
“Elchi” reports that the statement notes that September 20 is written in golden letters in the centuries-old statehood chronicle of the Azerbaijani people.
“On September 19-20, 2023, local anti-terror measures were carried out in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan with the aim of disarming and withdrawing the remnants of the Armenian armed forces from the territory of our country. Thus, as a result of the measures that were completed in less than 24 hours, state sovereignty was ensured over our territories.
In achieving this historic victory, the decisive role was played by the determined political will and leadership of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Victorious Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, as well as the high professionalism, valor, and heroism of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces,” the statement emphasized.
The statement, which points out that during the anti-terror measures, the Azerbaijani side paid special attention to the safety of the civilian population and targeted only the legitimate military objects and infrastructure of illegal armed groups, not civilians or civilian infrastructure, noted that the restoration of state sovereignty has created a new political reality in the region:
“It has opened new opportunities for the normalization of Azerbaijan-Armenia relations and ensuring lasting peace. Demonstrating its commitment to the peace agenda, our country has taken consistent and purposeful steps towards the normalization of relations.
The historic meeting held in Washington on August 8, 2025, with the participation of the leaders of Azerbaijan, the United States of America, and Armenia, was an important stage in the peace and normalization process.
Today, the agreements reached during the meetings of the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia are of great importance not only for ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region but also for realizing regional economic potential.”
It was stated that the restoration of economic and trade relations in the region and the implementation of confidence-building measures in this direction, as well as the promotion of the regional integration of international transport and logistics routes, will create new economic dividends and cooperation opportunities not only for Azerbaijan and Armenia but also for all interested parties. Proceeding from the created historic peace opportunity, the resolution of the issues ahead for the signing of a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the full normalization of relations is of great importance.
“Today, Azerbaijan is carrying out large-scale work towards the restoration of the liberated territories, ensuring the return of former internally displaced persons to their native lands, and the sustainable development of those territories. At the same time, eliminating the mine threat and determining the fate of missing persons are among our country’s main priorities.
State Sovereignty Day is a symbol of the Azerbaijani people’s commitment to their statehood, national will, and territorial integrity. This remarkable day is an important occasion to pay deep tribute to the cherished memory of our martyrs, to always protect the value of the historic Victory achieved at the cost of their lives, and to pass it on to future generations.
The state sovereignty of the Republic of Azerbaijan is eternal, indivisible, and inviolable.
