Azerbaijan’s Permanent Mission in Geneva organized a special event dedicated to the protection of the rights of mine victims within the framework of the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council.
“Elchi” reports that the event titled “Beyond Survival – Restoring Dignity and Reclaiming Rights” was held jointly with the “Universal Human Rights” organization and the Algerian Mission to the UN in Geneva.
Speaking at the event, Elshad Iskandarov, Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, stated that Baku had already launched a special initiative in 2024 aimed at restoring the fundamental rights of mine victims. According to him, as a result of this initiative, a resolution titled “The impact of anti-personnel mines on the full realization of all human rights” was adopted at the Human Rights Council in 2025.
The diplomat emphasized the importance of adopting a new resolution that envisions a transition from merely recognizing the rights of mine victims to ensuring them in practice. Drawing attention to the scale of the mine problem faced by Azerbaijan, he noted the importance of strengthening international cooperation and support for mine victims in this area.
The event featured speeches by the permanent representatives of Algeria, Mozambique, and Uganda to the UN Office in Geneva, as well as representatives from the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS), the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), and other international organizations.
During the discussions, the medical and psychological rehabilitation of mine victims, their reintegration into social and economic life, as well as the link between mine contamination, climate change, and human rights were the main topics of discussion.
