Denmark has welcomed the announcement by US President Donald Trump of an agreement that would give Washington permanent control over Greenland’s security and prevent Russia and China from establishing military bases in the Arctic territory.
According to news from “Elchi”, citing “The Times of Israel”, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that the signing of the agreement could be successful next week.
According to him, the document is expected to be signed in New York within the framework of the UN General Assembly with the participation of representatives from Denmark and Greenland.
“We hope that the long-standing uncertainty will be replaced by a legally binding agreement that strengthens security in the Arctic and North Atlantic region,” the minister wrote on his social media account.
Rasmussen noted that the agreement respects Denmark’s “red lines” and is of great importance against the backdrop of the changing security situation.
The specific terms of the agreement have not been disclosed. Denmark emphasizes that the country’s sovereignty over Greenland remains in effect.
It should be noted that after returning to the White House in January 2025, Donald Trump repeatedly stated that the US should control Greenland for strategic reasons. This position caused concern in NATO ally Denmark and led to extensive discussions within the alliance.
