6 Azerbaijani athletes have reached the semifinals of the 4th stage of the Beach Wrestling World Series, which kicked off today in Baku.
This was reported to “Elchi” by the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation.
At the start of the competition, which is being held in our country for the first time, qualifying matches were held. Later, the tournament moved on to group stage matches and round-robin bouts.
The opening ceremony of the tournament took place during the evening session. Minister of Youth and Sports Farid Gayibov, Secretary General of the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation Parvin Piriyev, and United World Wrestling Bureau member Pedro Silva spoke at the event.
In their speeches, they noted that beach wrestling has been rapidly gaining popularity in recent years due to its spectacle and dynamics, and that mass participation in this field is increasing year by year. They also expressed that this competition, held at the “Sea Breeze” resort center, was organized at a high level.
After the opening ceremony, the 2nd and 3rd round matches of the group stage took place.
In the men’s competition, 6 of our representatives qualified for the semifinals. Tomorrow, in the 80 kg category, members of the national team will compete against each other for a spot in the final. World champion Vusal Aliyev will test debutant Javid Niftalizade. Our other representative in this weight class, Sahib Dadashov, will try to defeat Georgian Diego Makharadze.
In the 90 kg category, two of our wrestlers have secured their names in the semifinals. Ramiz Hasanov, who returned to beach wrestling after a certain break, will face Georgian Evsem Shvelidze one step away from the final, while Ashraf Ashirov will face another Georgian athlete, Iuza Tsertsvadze.
Another debutant, Javid Feyziyev (+90 kg), will also clarify his relationship with an athlete from the neighboring country. Our heavyweight wrestler must overcome Tedore Ebanoidze to reach the final.
In the women’s competition, Nargiz Samadova (60 kg) will play her final round-robin match against Nogona Bakayoko (Ivory Coast).
