A roughly 5-ton upper stage of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket will crash into the Moon on August 5 at a speed of approximately 8,700 kilometers per hour.
“Elchi” reports that the event, discovered by Bill Gray, developer of the Project Pluto software that tracks astronomical objects, is expected to occur around 09:34 on August 5 near the Einstein crater on the western side of the Moon.
Researcher Benjamin Fernando from Los Alamos National Laboratory stated that the rocket component will vaporize upon impact, creating a flash of light and an ejecta cloud consisting of dust and crater material.
The rocket component in question remained in orbit after completing its mission during the launch of Firefly Aerospace’s “Blue Ghost 1” and ispace’s “Resilience” lunar vehicles on January 15, 2025.
