Argentina national football team striker Lionel Messi has finished the 2026 World Cup group stage as the tournament’s top scorer.
According to elchi, the Argentine scored six goals in the three group stage matches.
Messi scored a hat-trick in the opening match against Algeria (3:0). Then, he scored two goals in the match against Austria (2:0) and also found the net in the 3:1 victory against Jordan.
He became the fifth player in World Cup history to finish the group stage with six goals. Previously, similar results were achieved by Hungarian Sandor Kocsis (7 goals, 1954), German Gerd Muller (7 goals, 1970), Frenchman Just Fontaine (6 goals, 1958), and Russian Oleg Salenko (6 goals, 1994).
