Trump: I Heard UK Prime Minister Candidate Burnham Is Extremely Liberal
elchi reports that, according to Bloomberg, US President Donald Trump belittled UK Prime Minister candidate Andy Burnham by calling him “extremely liberal.”
“I don’t know anything. I think he was a mayor of a city. From what I hear, he is extremely liberal, extremely, which means he probably won’t open the North Sea,” Trump said during his meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House.
Trump also noted that he disagrees with outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer on many issues and has repeatedly warned him about problems related to energy, migration, and crime. The American leader also stated that he told Starmer he would lose his position, and that is exactly what happened. The publication notes that Burnham is likely to be the only candidate to replace Starmer as leader of the Labour Party and could hold this position by mid-July. Bloomberg writes that Trump’s comments suggest that “difficult relations” could develop between him and the new British Prime Minister.
The agency recalled that Burnham recently stated he is “quite open to new ideas” regarding oil and gas production in the North Sea and does not have a firm position on the matter. The Starmer government had previously refused to issue new licenses for oil and gas production in the North Sea as it wanted to transition to more environmentally friendly energy sources.
On June 22, Starmer announced his resignation as British Prime Minister because the Labour Party no longer considers him the best candidate for the next general election. Former Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is considered a candidate for the new Prime Minister position. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Starmer’s resignation would not affect relations between Moscow and London.
