Proposal to adopt a law on “Media Literacy”

A proposal has been made to adopt a law on “Media Literacy”.

This proposal was put forward by MP Sahib Aliyev during the discussion of the proposed amendments to the Law “On Media” at today’s session of the Milli Majlis.

The MP stated that just as hadiths of unknown origin and cause regarding religion can lead to ignorance, an abundance of information can also lead to information ignorance:

“There is a need to increase media literacy among people. In countries with a high level of protection against digital risks, media literacy issues are regulated not by the Law ‘On Media’, but by a separate law ‘On Media Literacy’. For example, this is the case in Finland and Malaysia. There is also a need to adopt a law ‘On Media Literacy’ in Azerbaijan. Knowledge and skills in this direction are taught to both children and adults. The new institution should also keep this issue in focus.”
