The French government has announced that it is preparing to extend the ban on mobile phone use, currently in force in primary and middle schools, to middle schools starting from the new academic year.
elchi reports that French Education Minister Edouard Geffray commented on young people’s use of social media and school regulations in a program broadcast on France Info.
Minister Geffray stated that he expects the final version of the legal regulation regarding social media use for those under 15, which has been on the agenda since the beginning of the year and is being negotiated between the two chambers of parliament, the Senate and the National Assembly, to be approved this summer.
Meanwhile, Geffray announced that they plan to implement the regulation on mobile phone use for those under 15, which has been in effect in primary and middle schools since 2018, for middle schools as well starting from the new academic year, adding: “I think this is absolutely essential for our students.”
Age limit for social media use
Although the draft text regarding the rules for social media use by those under 15 in France was approved by the National Assembly in January and by the Senate in April, there were differences between the drafts. For a law to pass through Parliament in France, the Senate and the National Assembly must agree on the same draft text.
While the use of social media by minors has recently been on the agenda of European countries, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on June 15 that they would implement rules regarding social media use for those under 16 starting early next year.
In Australia, regulations regarding access to social media platforms for young people under 16 were implemented in December 2025.
