For several years, a new geopolitical reality has been taking shape in the South Caucasus.
“Elchi” reports that Farid Shafiyev, Chairman of the Center of Analysis of International Relations (AIR Center), stated this at an event titled “New Geopolitical Realities in the South Caucasus: Azerbaijan and the Peace Agenda.”
He emphasized Azerbaijan’s role in the formation of this reality.
Farid Shafiyev added that Azerbaijan is the author of the new geopolitical reality.
“The election results show that Armenia wants to continue the peace process. But it must be remembered that Azerbaijan’s legitimate demands have not changed,” the AIR Center chairman said.
According to Farid Shafiyev, a number of articles published in Western media claim that Azerbaijan should abandon its demand for constitutional changes and a referendum from Armenia.
“We, however, say that Azerbaijan’s view on this matter is unambiguous. It seems Pashinyan and his party want peace, but we must also take into account the possibility that Armenia will not be governed by Pashinyan in the future. Therefore, we need the Armenian people to express their position on the peace process through a referendum,” the AIR Center chairman noted.
It should be recalled that Armenia’s Declaration of Independence contains territorial claims against Azerbaijan. The Declaration of Independence includes a clause regarding the necessity of uniting the former Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia. Azerbaijan objects to this and puts forward the amendment of the Constitution as a condition for signing a peace treaty with Armenia.
