A footballer has died after lightning struck the pitch during a match held in the Narathiwat province of southwestern Thailand.
“Elchi” reports that, according to Thai PBS television, the semifinal match of the “Golok FA Cup 2026” tournament was being played at the Santiphap Stadium in the Sungai Kolok district of the province.
During the extra time of the game, lightning struck the middle of the pitch, causing several players to lose consciousness.
First aid was provided to the players by medical teams that entered the field.
In the incident, Thai citizen and FC Yala player Sofvan Avae lost his life, while 9 other players were injured.
All of the injured were taken to the hospital.
Yala FC management expressed their condolences regarding Avae’s death. Sungai Golok Police Chief Thun Sirikhunt stated that the match was being played under heavy rain and strong winds. An investigation into the incident has been launched.
