A cyclosporiasis epidemic continues to spread in the USA. In Michigan, the number of infected people has exceeded 11,000, and the first deaths related to the epidemic have been recorded.
elchi reports that since July 30, approximately 200 people have been hospitalized, and two people with serious health problems have died from cyclosporiasis. These are the first recorded deaths from the epidemic.
The epidemic is not limited to Michigan. The number of cases in 45 US states has exceeded 18,000.
The cyclospora parasite, which causes intestinal infections, can be transmitted through the consumption of insufficiently washed fruits and vegetables, contaminated water, and feces. Experts recommend washing raw foods thoroughly and, if possible, cooking them at a temperature of at least 70 degrees Celsius.
Cyclosporiasis manifests with symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, weight loss, and fatigue. Although the disease itself is usually not fatal, it can pose a life-threatening risk to people with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions.
