New research shows that the root of the knotweed plant, used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine, can slow hair loss and support the regeneration of hair follicles.
elchi reports that scientists have stated that the root of the knotweed plant, which has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over a thousand years, may be effective in treating male-pattern baldness.
Androgenetic alopecia, also known as male-pattern baldness, causes hair follicles to shrink over time, leading to thinning hair and slowed growth. While existing treatments like finasteride and minoxidil can benefit some people, they are not considered suitable for everyone due to side effects such as sexual dysfunction and scalp irritation.
Researchers have determined that the dried root of the knotweed plant, known in Chinese as “He Shou Wu,” can influence many biological mechanisms that support hair growth.
According to the study, the plant may protect hair follicles by reducing the effect of the dihydrotestosterone (DHT) hormone, which plays a significant role in hair loss. It is also believed to prevent the premature death of follicle cells and increase blood circulation in the scalp.
Scientists stated that the plant also activates biological signals involved in cell growth, tissue repair, and intercellular communication, which may increase the likelihood of hair follicles entering the regrowth phase.
Han Bixian, one of the authors of the study, noted that the effects described in historical sources align quite well with modern hair biology, saying: “Modern research confirms that this is not folklore, but pharmacology.”
The study examined laboratory research, clinical reports, and historical herbal records together. The findings suggest that knotweed can not only protect existing hair but also create conditions that support hair regeneration.
Researchers state that when processed correctly, the plant demonstrates a positive safety profile and may offer an alternative option for those concerned about the side effects of existing medications. However, experts emphasize the importance of conducting more comprehensive clinical trials for definitive results.
