New Zealand may face more severe heatwaves and glacier melting in the near future.
elchi reports that a comprehensive climate report published in New Zealand shows that due to record levels of greenhouse gases, the country may soon face more frequent and intense heatwaves, as well as catastrophic glacier melting.
The report, titled “Our Atmosphere and Climate 2026” and released today, notes that New Zealand is facing increasing climate pressures that will have widespread impacts on the environment, native species, and communities.
According to the report, the average annual temperature in New Zealand has increased by 1.36 degrees Celsius since observations began in 1909, and seven of the ten warmest years on record have occurred in the last decade.
It is reported that rising temperatures are causing a rapid decrease in the volume of the country’s approximately 3,000 glaciers; the volume of glaciers has decreased from 56 cubic kilometers in 1997 to 30 cubic kilometers in 2023.
Rising temperatures have been cited as the main cause of processes such as ocean warming, sea-level rise, changes in precipitation patterns, and more severe extreme weather events.
