France faces wine crisis

France’s Ministry of Agriculture predicts that the volume of wine production in the country will fall to its lowest level in nearly 70 years, after vineyards were damaged by heatwaves and drought.

elchi reports that this was stated in a report by the relevant French authority. According to the “Bloomberg” agency, the Ministry of Agriculture noted that although the rains at the end of summer slightly improved production prospects compared to September forecasts, production volume this year is expected to be around 35 million hectoliters.

This figure is 2% lower than last year and 14% below the average of the last five years.

Therefore, it is emphasized that this year’s yield will be worse than in 2024, when unfavorable weather conditions caused the lowest production level since 1957.

France experienced three heatwaves during the summer. Firefighting operations were carried out in many places in the southern regions. Water levels in France’s small rivers and streams reached historic lows for this time of year by the end of July.

France’s Environment Minister, Monique Barbü, predicted that the damage caused by the drought to the country would amount to 10-15 billion euros.
