Can BRICS replace the UN? – A noteworthy message from Russia

“BRICS could replace the United Nations (UN) if its institutions disintegrate further.”

elchi reports that this was stated by Stanislav Tkachenko, a professor at the Department of European Studies at the Faculty of International Relations of Saint Petersburg State University and an expert at the “Valdai” Discussion Club.

“Perhaps the UN will not survive and will begin to collapse, leaving only its individual structures – financial or development aid,” the political scientist suggested.

Tkachenko noted that the future crisis of the UN and the potential degradation of its institutions will prompt developing countries to deepen cooperation within the framework of BRICS. He added that BRICS has now turned into a factory of bilateral meetings to determine global development trends thanks to the entry of associative members.

The political scientist emphasized that the Russian leadership has for many years undertaken the commitment to turn BRICS into a full-fledged global organization similar to the UN, but the 2024 Kazan summit led to a reorientation of the format. According to the expert, China and India will ultimately support Russia’s vision regarding the development of BRICS, which will ultimately affect the group’s development prospects.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the growing attention to the activities of BRICS. According to him, the core values and ideals of the association are attractive in many parts of the world.
