US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: “We must prepare to fight around the Moon”

The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff has stated that the US must prepare for combat operations near the Moon. These remarks, made by General Dan Kane at a summit in Washington, follow the US announcement regarding the deployment of weapons in space.
elchi reports that noting a new era of warfare has begun following the US announcement of deploying space-based weapons for the first time, Dan Kane stated that American troops must prepare to fight not only in Earth’s orbit but also around the Moon.
Speaking to military personnel and industry representatives at the Air, Space, and Cyber Conference held near Washington, US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Dan Kane emphasized that the US military must now adapt to “fight, resist, and win everywhere from the seabed to the lunar orbit.”
The term “Earth-Moon region” describes the area between the Earth’s surface and the Moon.
The statement regarding the US military’s readiness to fight in the region between Earth’s high orbit and the Moon came just days after Air Force Secretary Troy Meink announced at the same conference that the US is developing “orbital space control weapons.”
The recent statements by military officials regarding space weapons contradict long-standing traditions and international agreements that space should be used only for peaceful purposes and not be militarized.
The Space Force states that potential US adversaries may attempt to turn space into a battlefield.
Although many countries, including the US, have demonstrated the ability to destroy satellites in Earth’s orbit, those tests were conducted from the ground against their own satellites. However, according to Gagnon, “the intelligence community has a clear position that potential adversaries are trying to move war into space,” and the US military must respond.
Gagnon said: “Potential adversaries like the People’s Republic of China are actively operating within systems in certain regions of space.”
In 2024, China established its military space forces and tasked them with strengthening capabilities to manage space-related crises.
