Russia and China veto US initiative on Iran at UN Security Council

Russia and China have vetoed a draft resolution in the UN Security Council (UNSC) to extend the mandate of the expert panel of the 1737 Committee on Iran until September 2027.

elchi reports, citing Russian media, that 11 out of the 15 members of the UN Security Council voted in favor of the draft resolution prepared by the US.

Somalia and Pakistan abstained from the vote.

Previously, the US House of Representatives had passed a non-binding resolution calling on President Donald Trump to withdraw US troops from military operations against Iran. The document allows for the retention of US forces to protect the country, as well as its allies and partners, from attack.
