Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told reporters today that Tehran and Oman are nearing an agreement on establishing a temporary transit route in the Strait of Hormuz.
“Elchi” reports that Araghchi stated that negotiations have been held between the military and naval forces of the two countries based on existing maps, and a new route will be determined at the conclusion of those discussions.
According to him, talks with Oman regarding the legal mechanism and management of the Strait of Hormuz are ongoing.
The Iranian Foreign Minister noted that although the parties are very close to an agreement, the opening of the Strait of Hormuz depends on other conditions, including compensation for obligations arising from the US violation of the Islamabad agreement.
Araghchi stated that the previously existing TSS route is no longer considered suitable for shipping by the Islamic Republic of Iran, and a new TSS route is needed. According to him, this issue creates extensive technical and legal difficulties.
He added that for this reason, a temporary route is currently being discussed, and that temporary path will be considered as a base before the main route is determined.
Araghchi emphasized that a new route will be determined at the conclusion of the negotiations held between the military and naval forces of the two countries based on existing maps.
Touching upon the Islamabad agreement, the Iranian Foreign Minister said that violations regarding the agreement with Pakistan must be monitored one by one, and it was the US that violated this agreement.
According to him, the 5th clause of the agreement was being implemented by the Iranian side, and it was intended for transit conditions to return to normal within one month. Araghchi stated that within two weeks, the volume of transit had reached 60 percent of the normal level, but the US tried to create new routes in the Strait of Hormuz.
He noted that despite the warnings issued by his country, the US attempted to undermine Iran’s management of the strait. Araghchi emphasized that the violation of Iran’s management over the Strait of Hormuz and the Islamabad agreement is absolutely unacceptable.
