The US Department of Defense (Pentagon) has increased its order for Patriot missiles to $58.6 billion to meet the growing demand for air defense systems in the US military following the Iran-Iraq war.
elchi reports that, according to local media, the US military has increased its missile order from Lockheed Martin by $53.9 billion.
Under the revised contract, the initial order placed in April was $4.7 billion, bringing the total Patriot missile supply to $58.6 billion.
The Pentagon has also signed an initial $35 billion contract with the company for Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor missiles designed to counter ballistic missile threats.
In April, the US Department of Defense announced that it had reached a framework agreement with Boeing and Lockheed Martin to triple the production capacity of critical missile components. The framework agreements with Boeing and Lockheed Martin aim to increase the production of target seekers that allow Patriot missiles, which play a vital role in the US air defense system, to reach their targets.
