The Japan Self-Defense Forces have conducted live-fire exercises using “Tomahawk” missiles for the first time. According to the country’s Ministry of Defense, the firing was carried out by the crew of the destroyer “Chokai”.
elchi reports that the exercises were held in the Pacific Ocean with the support of the US Navy. The “Chokai” ship is expected to return to its permanent base at Sasebo port (Nagasaki Prefecture) in September.
The adoption of “Tomahawk” missiles, along with the deployment of long-range land-based missiles, is one of the steps taken by the Japanese military to acquire strike capabilities. It is planned to equip eight destroyers of the Self-Defense Forces, which are equipped with “Aegis” tracking and guidance systems, with “Tomahawk” missiles. To this end, the “Kirishima” and “Haguro” destroyers are being modernized, and by the end of the current fiscal year (by April 2027), this work will also begin on the “Atago” and “Myoko” ships.
