Road traffic accidents remain one of the main causes of death and injury in Azerbaijan.
In response to an inquiry by elchi, the State Statistical Committee reported that 285 people lost their lives in road traffic accidents in the country from January to June of this year.
According to the statistics, the vast majority of those who died are people of working age. Specifically, 182 people in the 25-64 age group fell victim to road accidents.
Another notable point is the increase in deaths among people aged 65 and older. While 37 people in this age group lost their lives in the first half of last year, that number has risen to 49 this year. This increase shows that elderly people remain a more vulnerable group in road traffic.
Of those who lost their lives, 225 were men and 60 were women.
One of the most striking indicators in the statistics relates to pedestrians. In the first six months of this year, 131 pedestrians lost their lives in road accidents.
Specifically, 84 pedestrians aged 25-64 and 34 pedestrians aged 65 and older died in accidents. For comparison, it should be noted that in the first half of last year, the number of pedestrians over 65 who died was 18.
Although the highest number of deaths, as in previous years, was recorded in passenger cars, a decrease is observed here. In the first half of this year, 125 passenger car drivers and passengers lost their lives.
Conversely, deaths among motorcycle drivers and passengers have increased. In January-June, 18 people died in motorcycle-related accidents. In the same period of 2024, this figure was 12. Thus, deaths among motorcycle users have increased by 50 percent within one year.
According to the report, 3 people lost their lives in accidents involving city and intercity buses, and 8 people died in incidents involving other vehicles.
