The former director of the Republican Perinatal Center, Mehriban Abasquliyeva, and department heads Elnur Ahmadli and Hamlet Mustafayev, who were convicted in the criminal case regarding the fire incident that resulted in the death of infants at the center, have filed an appeal against their sentences.
According to “Elchi”, the appeal will be heard at the Baku Court of Appeal in a process presided over by Judge Ramin Garagurbanli.
It should be recalled that by the verdict of the Baku Court of Grave Crimes, Mehriban Abasquliyeva was sentenced to 7 years and 3 months, Hamlet Mustafayev to 5 years and 8 months, and Elnur Ahmadli to 5 years and 2 months of imprisonment, and they were arrested in the courtroom.
It should be noted that on January 9, 2024, a criminal case was initiated by the Prosecutor General’s Office regarding the fire that occurred in the administrative building of the Republican Perinatal Center under various articles of the Criminal Code, and the conduct of the preliminary investigation was assigned to the Investigation Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
The investigation determined that as a result of the fire that occurred in the ward on the fourth floor, where the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Center’s Anesthesiology, Reanimation, and Intensive Care Department is located, 7 newborn babies died, 4 people were injured, and a total of 361 thousand manats of material damage was caused to the institution.
Mehriban Abasquliyeva, who worked as the director of the Center, was charged under Articles 308.2 (abuse of official powers causing grave consequences) and 225.3 (violation of fire safety rules causing the death of two or more persons by negligence) of the Criminal Code, while Hamlet Mustafayev and Elnur Ahmadli, who worked as department heads at the same center, were charged under Article 225.3 of the Criminal Code.
