German automotive giant “Volkswagen” will close four of its plants by 2031.
“Elchi” reports that the “Der Spiegel” publication has obtained information regarding this matter.
Germany’s largest auto concern intends to save costs; for this reason, production in Zwickau and Emden will be halted in five years. Investments are also expected to decrease by 15 percent, which amounts to approximately 50 billion euros. Total expenses will be reduced by 11 billion euros by the end of 2030, and the main “Volkswagen” brand and component production divisions will be transformed into separate legal entities.
The concern’s management is trying to rectify the crisis situation and save the symbol of the German auto industry from collapse. To achieve this, mass layoffs (approximately 100,000 employees) and the closure of four assembly plants in the FRG (facilities in Hanover, Zwickau, and Emden, as well as the “Audi” plant in Neckarsulm) will be carried out. In addition, the company’s board of directors intends to discuss reducing core investments by approximately 15 percent (to a benefit of slightly more than 130 billion euros) over the next five years.
Against the backdrop of the crisis, “Volkswagen” has decided to abandon the renewal of its lawnmower fleet and has entrusted the maintenance of grass at one of its European facilities to a hundred sheep. The duties of the new “employees” include maintaining the grounds of the “Volkswagen” plant in Poznan, Poland. There, a 18.3-megawatt photovoltaic system has been installed under more than 31,000 solar panels. A flock of sheep will graze among these panels until autumn.
