Floods hit Ivory Coast and Ghana: Many dead

Floods caused by heavy rains that have been continuing since Saturday on the coast of Ivory Coast have killed 59 people, while 12 people have died in floods that occurred in Ghana on Monday.

Ivory Coast’s Minister of National Reconciliation, Solidarity and Poverty Reduction, Myss Belmonde Dogo, stated that some of the deaths occurred in the Attecoube and Yopougon neighborhoods of Abidjan, the economic capital of Ivory Coast.
Ghana succumbs to floods
Ghana, a neighbor of the West African country of Ivory Coast, has also been hit by floods following heavy rains. At least 12 people have died in the floods that engulfed a large part of the country, including the capital Accra, on Monday. Buildings and roads have been submerged, and access to various parts of Accra and the city of Tema has been cut off.
Ghana National Fire Service spokesperson Alex King Nartey stated that it has been difficult for emergency response teams to reach the affected areas and that they had to request assistance from the military.
The Ghana Meteorological Agency has called on the public to be prepared, stating that more rain is expected throughout the week.
