Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for face-to-face negotiations in an open letter addressed directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelensky proposed that the meeting be held in a neutral third country, while U.S. President Donald Trump stated that both sides must “make compromises.”
“Elchi” reports that the text, which is the first direct and open letter sent by Zelensky to Putin since Russia began its full-scale invasion in 2022, includes broad criticisms of the Russian leader’s 26-year rule.
The Ukrainian president drew attention to the changing priorities of the U.S., stating that it would be a mistake to expect the Trump administration to focus on ending the war in Ukraine at a time when Washington is primarily focused on a war with Iran. In his letter, Zelensky stated, “I am proposing a meeting.”
This move by the Ukrainian leader comes at a time when Kyiv has increased its long-range strike capabilities, making further Russian advances more difficult and beginning to create a certain balance on the ground. Meanwhile, Moscow has intensified air strikes on Ukrainian territory, attempting to exploit Kyiv’s vulnerabilities and its susceptibility to ballistic missile attacks.
