Starmer: Azerbaijan is a very important partner in strengthening international energy security

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has sent a letter to the 31st ‘Baku Energy Week’.

“Elchi” reports that the letter was read by David Reed, the UK’s Trade Commissioner for Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The letter states:

“Dear President Aliyev,

It is a pleasure to send my warm greetings to everyone participating in the 2026 ‘Baku Energy Week’. In a time of global uncertainty, Azerbaijan remains a very important partner in strengthening international energy security and a resilient position.

When we visited Baku for COP29 eighteen months ago, I was deeply impressed by the serious attention Azerbaijan pays to the energy transition. Since then, plans have turned into action, energy production from renewable sources has accelerated, and extensive solutions for the transport of green energy both onshore and offshore have been presented. Your country has played a crucial role in strengthening Ukraine’s energy resilience in the face of Russia’s sustained and illegal attacks on its energy infrastructure. Your country has created opportunities for European countries to build their own energy resilience through the diversification of supply chains. Also, last year, your country began exporting energy to Armenia, reinforcing your commitment to long-term peace.

As we work towards our shared climate goals, the United Kingdom remains committed to working shoulder-to-shoulder with Azerbaijan to strengthen our climate resilience and accelerate the global energy transition, which is vital for this government’s plans to achieve net zero by 2050. Our long-term energy partnership, led by British industry, will serve as a cornerstone of our bilateral relations and will continue to act as a driver of growth in both our economies. By combining our expertise in renewable energy and clean technologies, we can foster the innovation necessary to achieve net zero and ensure a prosperous, sustainable future.

I applaud the leadership you have shown for this initiative and wish you and all the participants a highly productive and successful event.”
