Today marks the anniversary of the passing of Elmira Suleymanova, the first Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan.
According to elchi, two years have passed since the death of Elmira Suleymanova.
She was born on July 17, 1937, in Baku. Elmira Suleymanova became a Candidate of Chemical Sciences in 1968, a Doctor of Chemical Sciences in 1980, a Senior Researcher in 1970, and a Professor in 1988. She had been a member of the New York Academy of Sciences since 1997. She was a personal pensioner of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. She is the author of more than 200 scientific works and 40 inventions.
She served as the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan from 2002 to 2019. By the decrees of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, Elmira Suleymanova was awarded the “Shohrat” (Glory) and “Sharaf” (Honor) orders for her services in the field of human rights protection.
Elmira Suleymanova passed away on April 25, 2024, at the age of 86. She was buried in the Second Alley of Honor.
