German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that, despite the complex political context, he is striving to build a professional and “smart” personal relationship with US President Donald Trump.

According to Merz, under current circumstances, European allies are unable to fully guarantee their own security without support.
“At the moment, we cannot defend ourselves independently,” the Chancellor noted, adding that only a few European leaders maintain a reliable communication channel with the American president.
