School Start Times in Azerbaijan May Be Changed

In recent years, delaying school start times, taking into account the biological rhythms and health of adolescents, has become one of the discussed issues in the global education system. Various approaches are being put forward regarding the start of classes at 09:00 or later instead of 08:00, as well as the optimization of the shift education system.

Education expert Elchin Afandi commented on the issue.

The expert stated that changing the school start time may be discussed in the future and relevant decisions may be made:

“The current traffic congestion observed in the capital, as well as the measures taken in terms of both the metro and surface transport related to the transport infrastructure, show the relevance of this issue. Considering the current situation, the start time of classes may be discussed to be moved forward or backward to some extent.

Population density in the capital and its surrounding areas, especially in the Absheron district, also leads to an increase in the number of students. As a result, a three-shift or two-shift education process is organized in some educational institutions. Increasing the number of shifts further can cause physical fatigue for students, as well as difficulties in preparing for the lessons of the next day”.

Elchin Afandi noted that the construction and commissioning of new schools may allow for the transition to a one-shift education system. In this case, changing the start time of classes would also be possible.

According to him, such an approach can positively affect both the reduction of congestion in the transport infrastructure and the more efficient organization of the education process. (modern.az)
