German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that compulsory military service could be reinstated in the country.
elchi reports that this information was disseminated by “Deutschlandfunk” radio.
“We have introduced a new military service model on a voluntary basis. I don’t want to get ahead of events and state the results of the assessment now, but we have not included the return to compulsory military service in our pre-election program by chance,” the chancellor said.
It should be noted that compulsory military conscription in Germany was suspended in 2011. Its reinstatement is currently a subject of political discussion, and the authorities must assess whether the voluntary model will allow for sufficient recruitment of new soldiers.
