Information provided at the UN about atrocities committed by the former occupying regime in Karabakh

Information was provided about the atrocities committed by the military commanders of the former occupying regime during the conflict in the statement made by the Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the UN, Ambassador Tofiq Musayev, at the Sixth Committee of the UN General Assembly, under agenda item 81 (“Status of the Protocols Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and relating to the Protection of Victims of Armed Conflicts”).

“Elchi” reports that Ambassador Tofiq Musayev, Azerbaijan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, drew attention to the ongoing deaths and injuries among civilians in Azerbaijan due to mines, as well as the fate of thousands of Azerbaijanis still considered missing in connection with the past conflict.

Information was also provided about the prosecution and conviction of military commanders and leaders of the former occupying regime for acts committed during the conflict, most of which are considered serious crimes under international law. It was emphasized that calls for their release are unfounded and contrary to international law.

Ambassador T. Musayev stated that since such crimes constitute an attack on universal values, no state should arrogate to itself the right to exempt those who commit them from responsibility or to disregard the legal consequences of their crimes:

“The international community must be resolute in opposing impunity and standing by the victims, survivors, and their families. Justice helps to establish the truth, preserve historical facts, and create a basis for genuine reconciliation.”
