The UK government has signed a new partnership agreement with Google to help drivers save money amid rising fuel prices.
“Elchi” reports that by using the government’s “Fuel Finder” database, drivers will for the first time be able to view real-time fuel prices at nearby stations via Google Maps and Waze.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) estimates that this initiative will save vehicle-owning families an average of £40 a year.
Energy Consumers Minister Polly Billington stated that addressing the cost-of-living crisis is a priority and that easier access to the cheapest fuel is a game-changer for drivers.
Record high prices and oversight
The announcement comes at a time when diesel prices have reached record highs.
Since February, fuel stations in the UK have been required to report price changes within 30 minutes, or face fines.
While the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) intervenes in cases of non-compliance, 99% of stations are fully participating in the system.
