At least 51 people have died and more than 1 million people have been affected as a result of floods caused by heavy rains in Bangladesh in recent days.
elchi reports that thousands of people have been left homeless due to flash floods and landslides that have engulfed a large part of the country, including the capital, Dhaka.
Bangladesh, a low-lying country with numerous rivers, experiences heavy rains and flooding every year during the monsoon season. However, experts say that climate change is making these rains more intense and frequent.
Following the rains, which began more than a week ago and intensified in recent days, authorities have issued flood and landslide warnings, families have been evacuated from high-risk areas, and school exams have been postponed. Thousands of people who lost their homes are currently struggling to survive in government-established shelters. According to official statements, more than 1 million people have been negatively affected by the disaster.
Of the 51 deaths reported so far, 28 were recorded in Cox’s Bazar. This region is home to more than 1 million Rohingya and constitutes the world’s largest refugee settlement.
