Approximately 900 snakes have escaped from a farm in southern China. The farm was submerged after a dam collapsed due to a typhoon and subsequent flooding. Hundreds of snakes, including deadly cobras, have spread to the village of Dengwei, where a state of emergency has been declared.
elchi reports that, according to the Global Times newspaper, the Liulan dam in Guangxi province collapsed due to flooding caused by a severe typhoon.
The retaining walls and fences of a snake breeding farm in the area affected by the dam’s waters were destroyed, and approximately 900 snakes escaped.
Hundreds of snakes, including deadly cobras, have spread to the village of Dengwei, where a state of emergency has been declared.
A widespread panic has erupted in the snake-infested village of Dengwei, with hundreds of snakes seen swimming in flooded streets and attempting to climb into house windows.
Villagers, left standing in waist-deep water, have been struggling to protect themselves from the snakes using bamboo poles. Stocks of antivenom have been increased, and emergency response teams have been dispatched.
Following the incident, a provincial-level alert was issued, and numerous search-and-rescue and emergency response teams were sent to the region.
The Guangzhou Emergency Management Bureau announced that teams in special protective gear are conducting operations to both capture the reptiles and evacuate flood victims. Authorities stated that stocks of antivenom in the region have been increased and special rapid response lines for potential cobra bites have been established at local hospitals.
So far, it has been reported that one villager has been hospitalized due to a snake bite.
It is reported that 39 people have died so far as a result of the severe flooding caused by Typhoon Maysak, which affected southern China.
