Armenia has begun the restoration of the Gyumri–Akhurik and Yeraskh (Arazdeyen) railway lines.
“Elchi” reports that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this to journalists.
“At a time when international railway routes are being integrated into the region, the country cannot remain a mere observer while these routes bypass Armenia. These roads are the property of the Republic of Armenia, and we must manage our own property.”
The Prime Minister stated that under current conditions, Armenia is losing its competitive advantages because the management of its railways is under a Russian concession.
Pashinyan reiterated that the shortest route from Central Asia to Europe passes through Armenia, particularly through the country’s northern regions.
According to Pashinyan, work is currently underway with the European Union to open the highway stretching from Azerbaijan’s Gazakh district through Armenia’s Ijevan, Vanadzor, and Gyumri cities to Akhurik (Turkish border) for international freight transport: “This project is very easy to implement. It only requires political agreement.”
