New underground tremors have been recorded in Venezuela, where efforts to eliminate the consequences of a devastating earthquake are ongoing.
elchi reports that, according to information provided by country officials to the “Democrata” publication, a new seismic tremor with a magnitude of 4.2 was recorded on Monday. The epicenter of the earthquake was located 10 kilometers east of the La Guaira state in the north of the country.
According to the Venezuelan Foundation for Seismological Research (Funvisis), a second earthquake with a magnitude of 2.7 occurred shortly after in the La Guaira district.
Based on the agency’s data, the foci of the recent underground tremors were located at depths of 2.9 and 5 kilometers, respectively. Several weaker tremors had been recorded even before these seismic events.
The La Guaira region remains the most affected area following the strong earthquake that occurred on June 24. According to the authorities, more than 400 aftershocks have been recorded since the main strike.
The underground tremors were felt both in La Guaira, where a state of emergency has been declared, and in the country’s capital, Caracas.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, to report new underground tremors, and, as much as possible, to avoid traveling to central coastal areas so as not to hinder the work of rescue services in the affected districts.
It should be noted that as a result of the earthquake that occurred in Venezuela on June 24, at least 774 buildings were damaged or completely destroyed. The death toll has risen to 1,450 people.
